We often find the best way to get a quick overall feeling for a city, is to take a tour. Even though I lived in Munich for quite a few years, it's a long time ago.
We took a tour and really enjoyed it. Many buildings and monuments we already knew, but it was interesting to see how much Munich has grown. It feels less like a provincial city now if conspicuous consumption has anything to do with it. We even saw the street where I used to work. Always exclusive, it is now full of top end shops.
